Natural Resources : Hyderabad

The city of Hyderabad is blessed with the availability of a major river known as Musi river on the banks of which the city is situated. Given below is the  brief description about the natural resources of Hyderabad.

Musi River:

Hyderabad is located on the banks of river Musi that flows through a major portion of the city and divides the historic old city with the new. The river originates from Anantagiri Hills (90 km from Hyderabad) and joins Krishna River near Wazirabad in Nalgonda district. Musi River was called Muchukunda River in pre-historic days. A few bridges cross the river; the oldest, called "Purana Pul"(literally meaning old bridge) was built during the 16th century by the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda.

There are two dams built on it - Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. The Osman Sagar Dam was built by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the VII th Nizam of Hyderabad in 1908, when the heavy floods made huge loss of property.  Today both these reservoirs serve as the major drinking water sources for Hyderabad city. These dams also prevented the city from flooding that encountered till the early decades of 20th century.

Today, due to indiscriminate urbanization and lack of planning, the river has become a receptacle for all the untreated domestic and industrial waste waters coming out of Hyderabad and has therefore become polluted. Numerous efforts to clean it have failed. The river water downstream to city is highly polluted.

Apart from this there few more water reservoirs which are considered as the major natural resources of Hyderabad.

Due to its peaceful atmosphere it serves as the most fascinating picnic spot for the peace lovers. The tourism department of Andhra Pradesh also provides the facility of small cottages for the accommodation to the tourists.
